Studies have been conducted to examine the intrinsic association between online social media use and loneliness among older adults from different theoretical perspectives, but the results are inconsistent. Meta-analysis was used to explore the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly to clarify the controversies. The current study contained 39 research literatures, including 49 independent effect sizes. Random effects model was selected for analysis, and it was found that social media use was negatively correlated with loneliness, emotional loneliness and social loneliness of the elderly. Furthermore, the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly was moderated by social media measurement indicators and loneliness measurement tools, but was not by gender and cultural background. This study provided a more accurate estimate of the impact of social media use on loneliness in the elderly, and clarified the differences in the magnitude and direction of the correlation between the two, which would be helpful for guiding the elderly to use social media rationally to alleviate loneliness.

The Effect of Morpheme Frequency on Chinese Compound Word Recognition---Evidences From Intermediate Indonesian-Chinese Learners
CHEN Lin, XU Guiping, WENG Feifei
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2018, 16 (2): 145-149.
    Abstract697)      PDF(pc) (497KB)(9091)       Save
The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of morpheme frequency on compound word recognition for intermediate Indonesian-Chinese learners by using a word decision task. The study found that morpheme frequency affected Chinese compound word recognition for intermediate Indonesian-Chinese learners. In addition, the morpheme frequency effect was modulated by the position of morpheme. High frequency of initial morpheme gave rise to higher word decision accuracy than low frequency. The effect of final morpheme frequency on word recognition was modulated by the frequency of the initial morpheme. Final morpheme frequency affected word recognition only when the initial morpheme frequency was high. No significant effect was found when the initial morpheme frequency was low. The results supported that intermediate non-native Chinese learners have established morphemic representation with vocabulary development, and the frequency of initial morpheme played a more important role in Chinese compound word recognition than final morpheme.

As a social glue, empathy has always been considered as one of the most important research projects in social cognitive neuroscience. However, with the deepening of research, the original concept and connotation of empathy have gradually become vague, which is embodied in the mixture of empathy, sympathy, and compassion in research. In fact, unlike empathy, sympathy and compassion have a long history. For example, the notion of ‘ceyinzhixin’, which was raised by Mencius, and Hume's sympathy theory. In order to distinguish the concept and connotation of empathy, sympathy, and compassion, and to elaborate the related problems in present research, the current study reviews the references from word sources, concepts and measurements, as to standardize the use of these terms and provide some suggestions for empirical research and theoretical discussion in this field.

Inhibitory Control in Speech Production of Children Who Stutter: Evidence from a Verbal Go/Nogo Task
    ZHAO Liming, LIU Yiling
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2019, 17 (6): 780-786.
    Abstract578)      PDF(pc) (550KB)(5893)       Save
Inhibitory control plays an important role in speech production, and its dysfunction may be one of the causes of stuttering. Previous studies have found that adults who stutter (AWS) have over-activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus, which is associated with inhibitory control, but not in the children who stutter (CWS). In addition, the previous researches on inhibitory control of CWS only involve the response of pressing buttons. These results are also controversial. Therefore, this study used the verbal Go/Nogo task to test the ability of inhibitory control of CWS in speech production. The results showed that there is no significant difference in reaction times of hit and false alarms, and percentages of miss trials and false alarms between the CWS and the control group. There is also no correlation between these indicators and the degree of stuttering for the CWS group. Ruling out the speed-accuracy trade-off, these results suggest the deficit in the inhibitory control of speech production is not universal for the CWS. This supports the speculation to some extent that the right inferior frontal gyrus of AWS is over-activated to compensate for the inadequate activation of the contralateral language area.

A systematic review was conducted to study the transfer effects of n-back working memory training in healthy adults aged 18~50 years and the factors affecting the transfer effects. Thirty-two studies and 69 independent effect sizes together with 1820 participants which met the inclusion criteria of meta-analysis were selected. The meta-analysis results revealed that n-back training had a significant medium effect size on the untrained n-back task (nearest transfer effect: g=0.54), while the transfer effects on both other working memory tasks (near transfer effect: g=0.20) and cognitive control tasks (far transfer effect: g=0.20) showed small effect size. The moderator analysis showed that the number of training sessions could influence nearest transfer effect. The current study indicats that a substantial part of transfer effect following n-back training is task-specific; in other words, the transfer effect is large in nearest transfer, while both near transfer effect and far transfer effect are small. Moreover, the number of training sessions influences the nearest transfer effect.
