Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to discuss the relationship between the representations of area-of-rectangle problems and fluid intelligence in the framework of Xin’s relational-representational complexity model. 310 4~6 graders participated in this study and finished an area-of-rectangle problem test and Raven’s standard progressive matrices. The results indicated that there is a moderate correlation between the representations of area-of-rectangle problems and fluid intelligence. With the increase of age, the levels of these children’s representation improved. To sum up, the area-of-rectangle problem test based on the relational-representational complexity model can be an effective measure of children’s representational development. Moreover, the significant correlation between the representations and fluid intelligence indicated the external validity of this model.

Key words: relational-representational complexity model, representational development, fluid intelligence, Raven’s standard progressive matrices
