Abstract: 5251 students from 10 middle school in Xiamen were measured with SCL-90. The reliability and validity of SCL-90 scale were tested, and the content and structure validity were tested by confirmatory factor analysis. The norm was established and contrasted to other study results. The results of this study indicated that the correlations between each item score and the total score were 0.37~0.70, the Crobach alphas of the total scale was 0.97 and the subscales were 0.73~0.88, the split-half reliabilities of the total scale was 0.94 and the subscales were 0.71~0.87. The first-order and the second-order confirmatory factor analysis showed that the observed data perfect fit for the hypothesized structure. The results also indicated that 16.1% of the students showed all kinds of obvious mental health problems and that these mental health problems were essentially focused on hostility, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, paranoid ideation and anxiety. Finally, the problems of SCL-90 and the results explanation were also discussed.
