    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2023, 21 (2): 260-265.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2023.02.016
    Abstract3954)   HTML55)    PDF(pc) (798KB)(768)       Save
According to the caring theory and the meaning-making model, this study investigated 1377 middle school students in Chongqing by questionnaires, and aimed to explore the relationship between teachers’ caring behavior and middle school students’ academic stress, as well as the role of sleep quality and meaning in life in it. The results showed that: 1) teachers’ caring behavior was negatively correlated with middle school students’ academic stress; 2) sleep quality served as a mediator to transmit the effect of teachers’ caring behavior on middle school students’ academic stress; 3) meaning in life moderated the relationship between teachers’ caring behavior, sleep quality and middle school students’ academic stress. Specifically, meaning in life moderated the first half of the indirect path and the direct path. These results indicate that teachers’ caring behavior can affect middle school students’ academic stress through sleep quality, and middle school students with higher meaning in life can better regulate sleep quality and academic stress.

The mobile phone addiction is a unique psychological and behavioral problem in the Internet era. A number of studies have examined the prevalence of mobile phone addiction, but the results are inconsistent. In order to clarify the controversies in this field and explain the reasons affecting the prevalence of mobile phone addiction, this study used the meta-analysis method to explore the global prevalence of mobile phone addiction and its influencing factors. The current study contained 174 research literatures, including 178 independent effect sizes, with a total of 145,380 participants. Random effects model was selected for analysis, and it was found that global prevalence of mobile phone addiction was 28.3%. Furthermore, the cultural background, assessment tools and the year of publication had significant effect on the prevalence of mobile phone addiction, while the age stage had no significant effect. Compared with other behavior addictions, these results indicate that the mobile phone addiction is one of the most common addiction types in the world, supporting the relational-cultural theory and accessibility hypothesis.

To test the reliability and validity of the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS) in primary school students, a total of 3084 children from first grade to sixth grade were investigated with the Chinese version of Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS-C). Then, we obtained the formal scale through item analysis, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The formal scale includes two subscales, that is, math evaluation anxiety and learning math anxiety. The multi-group confirmatory factor analysis results showed that the AMAS-C reached full measurement invariant across Chinese primary school students’ gender, grade, and region. The finding indicates that the AMAS-C is a good valid and reliable instrument to assess mathematics anxiety of Chinese primary school students.

Specifically, adolescents might experience more alienation when using the negative style. This study indicated that parental phubbing might enhance adolescents’ alienation. Besides, reducing maladaptive cognition and regulating the coping style could prevent adolescents’ alienation.

Meta-analysis was used to explore the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly to clarify the controversies. The current study contained 39 research literatures, including 49 independent effect sizes. Random effects model was selected for analysis, and it was found that social media use was negatively correlated with loneliness, emotional loneliness and social loneliness of the elderly. Furthermore, the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly was moderated by social media measurement indicators and loneliness measurement tools, but was not by gender and cultural background. This study provided a more accurate estimate of the impact of social media use on loneliness in the elderly, and clarified the differences in the magnitude and direction of the correlation between the two, which would be helpful for guiding the elderly to use social media rationally to alleviate loneliness.

    YAN Zhiqiang, LI Shan
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2021, 19 (3): 424-430.
    Abstract627)   HTML65)    PDF(pc) (602KB)(827)       Save
In order to explore the impact of empathy on depression and the role of peer-relationship plays in it. The current study used the Interpersonal Reactivity Index-C, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scales, and the Friendship Qualities Scale to measure participants’ empathy, depressive symptoms, and peer relationships. We employed 458 early adult college students. The results showed that empathy was significantly positively correlated with depressive symptoms and peer-relationship, and peer-relationship was significantly negatively correlated with depression. Conflict dimensions of peer-relationship could moderate the relationship between affective empathy and depression after controlling gender and age. Therefore, these findings suggest that peer-relationship has a moderating effect on the relationship between empathy and depression. In specific, the high conflict peer-relationship strengthens the relationship between empathy and depression while the low conflict peer-relationship weakens the relationship between empathy and depression.

Effectiveness of N-Back Working Memory Training: An Evidence from Meta-Analysis
YOU Xuqun, LI Qianqin, ZHANG Zhenyu, HUANG Pujiang, LIU Zhiyuan
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2021, 19 (6): 794-801.
    Abstract579)   HTML27)    PDF(pc) (610KB)(915)       Save
A systematic review was conducted to study the transfer effects of n-back working memory training in healthy adults aged 18~50 years and the factors affecting the transfer effects. Thirty-two studies and 69 independent effect sizes together with 1820 participants which met the inclusion criteria of meta-analysis were selected. The meta-analysis results revealed that n-back training had a significant medium effect size on the untrained n-back task (nearest transfer effect: g=0.54), while the transfer effects on both other working memory tasks (near transfer effect: g=0.20) and cognitive control tasks (far transfer effect: g=0.20) showed small effect size. The moderator analysis showed that the number of training sessions could influence nearest transfer effect. The current study indicats that a substantial part of transfer effect following n-back training is task-specific; in other words, the transfer effect is large in nearest transfer, while both near transfer effect and far transfer effect are small. Moreover, the number of training sessions influences the nearest transfer effect.
