Shuying XU, Shuguang CAI, Tingyong FENG
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2023, 21 (5): 592-599.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2023.05.003
    Abstract248)   HTML394)    PDF(pc) (818KB)(2264)       Save

According to the emotion of episodic prospection hypothesis, the present study attempted to use a 3 (prospective emotional valence: positive, negative, neutral) × 2 (group: training, control) × 2 (test time: pre, post) mixed design to investigate the effect of episodic prospective ability on delay discounting. The results showed that: 1) The stronger the episodic prospective ability, the greater the degree of change in delay discounting rate. 2) This process was also moderated by prospective emotional valence, that is, positive prospective emotion decreased delay discounting rate, and negative prospective emotion increased delay discounting rate. These results illustrate that episodic prospective ability influences the extent of delay discounting rate, whereas prospective emotional valence moderates the direction of delay discounting.

Studies have been conducted to examine the intrinsic association between online social media use and loneliness among older adults from different theoretical perspectives, but the results are inconsistent. Meta-analysis was used to explore the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly to clarify the controversies. The current study contained 39 research literatures, including 49 independent effect sizes. Random effects model was selected for analysis, and it was found that social media use was negatively correlated with loneliness, emotional loneliness and social loneliness of the elderly. Furthermore, the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly was moderated by social media measurement indicators and loneliness measurement tools, but was not by gender and cultural background. This study provided a more accurate estimate of the impact of social media use on loneliness in the elderly, and clarified the differences in the magnitude and direction of the correlation between the two, which would be helpful for guiding the elderly to use social media rationally to alleviate loneliness.

    Abstract329)   HTML26)    PDF(pc) (601KB)(740)       Save
Chinese psychology has made great progress in the past hundred years. However, under the influence of western scientism, there are some problems in the research object of Chinese psychology, such as the study of human elements, mental equal to material, and some limitations in the research paradigm, such as reductionism and mechanism, which lead to the shortcomings of Chinese psychology in serving the social reality of China. The report to the 20th CPC National Congress clearly pointed out the “two combinations”, that is, combining the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and excellent traditional culture. The “two combinations” provides guidelines to build a psychological theory system with Chinese style. In the face of the problems of China’s national and social development, Chinese psychology should realize that human beings have multi-dimensional attributes such as biology, psychology, culture, society and politics. Meanwhile, we should study the fundamental questions of what are human beings, human psychology and thought, human attributes and development, human behavior in reality and human ultimate pursuit of the meaning of life under the guidance of Marxism. The fundamental principle of reconstructing the theoretical system of Chinese psychology is to adhere to and develop Marxism, and constantly promote the innovation of Chinese excellent traditional culture, to enrich the theoretical system of Chinese psychology.

    Abstract311)   HTML23)    PDF(pc) (1224KB)(631)       Save
This study examined the effects of childhood emotional neglect (CEN) on emotion regulation abilities and resting-state functional connectivity of the thalamus. Two groups of college students who have experienced solitary CEN and who have no childhood traumatic experience were recruited. Questionnaires and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were used to collect data. The results showed that the neglect group had more difficulty regulating emotions and used fewer reappraisal strategies. Additionally, the functional connectivity between the thalamus and the dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus was stronger in the neglect group. Cross-group analysis showed that the effect of thalamus functional connectivity on emotion regulation difficulty was fully mediated by the reappraisal score. These findings suggest that solitary CEN may lead to emotion regulation difficulty in adulthood, and changes in spontaneous activity of the thalamus may affect adult emotion regulation abilities by influencing reappraisal strategies.

    Abstract350)   HTML28)    PDF(pc) (749KB)(615)       Save

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between parental psychological control, future orientation, parental academic involvement and academic anxiety among children. A sample of 5164 children in grades 4 to 6 from 7 primary schools of Shandong Province completed anonymous questionnaires. After controlling for age, only child and gender, the results showed that: 1) Parental psychological control could negatively predict future orientation and positively predict children’s academic anxiety. 2) The relation between parental psychological control and children’s academic anxiety was mediated by future orientation. 3) The effect of parental psychological control on children’s academic anxiety was moderated by parental academic involvement. These results indicate that parental psychological control decreases the future orientation of children and thus increases children’s academic anxiety, whereas parental academic involvement reduces the negative effects of parental psychological control on children’s academic anxiety.

This study aimed to investigate the behavioral inhibition of impulsive violent offenders in the state of anger by using two-choice oddball task and event-related potential (ERP) techniques. We used film clips to induce participants’ anger. Behavioral results showed that irrespective of groups, the difference between the deviant stimulus and standard stimulus response time in anger state was significantly longer than that in neutral state. ERP results showed that in the control group, P3 amplitudes showed no difference between anger state and neutral state. However, in impulsive violent offenders, anger led to larger P3 amplitudes than neutral. The present study demonstrated that individuals had difficulty with behavioral inhibition in anger. The difference of behavioral inhibition between the impulsive violent offenders and the control group was mainly reflected in the P3 component.

In order to investigate the characteristics of the inhibitory control ability of mobile phone addicts, 34 participants were screened by the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale. Seventeen were assigned to the mobile phone addiction group, and the rest were assigned to the non-mobile phone addiction group. All participants completed the antisaccade task. The results showed that: 1) The antisaccade error rate of the mobile phone addiction group was significantly higher than that of the non-mobile phone addiction group. 2) The prosaccade latency in the mobile phone addiction group was significantly shorter than in the non-mobile phone addiction group. The results indicate that the mobile phone addiction group has a lower inhibitory control ability than the non-mobile phone addiction group, suggesting that mobile phone addicts are easily driven by stimuli and can hardly suppress attentional interference generated by irrelevant stimuli.

Effects of Self-Social Value Orientation and Other’s Social Value Orientation on Cooperative Behavior and Its Underlying Mechanisms
Qian SUN, Jun ZHOU, Yongfang LIU
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2022, 20 (6): 821-827.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2022.06.015

The present study aimed to explore the influence of self- and other-social value orientation (SVO) on cooperation behavior and its psychological mechanisms. A total of 273 participants completed the triple matrix game, which was used to select Pro-Socials and Pro-Selfs. After that, participants were presented with their confederate’s SVO, and they were required to indicate their cooperative expectations towards their confederate and to make their own cooperation decisions in the public goods game. Results showed that the more pro-social the participants’ SVO was, the higher their expectations towards their confederate, and the more they chose to cooperate with others. But this pattern only existed when the SVO of their confederate was unknown or pro-social. These results shed light on the crucial role of others’ SVO and cooperative expectations in social interaction through the perspective of bidirectional interaction, which has implications for how to promote cooperative behavior.

The Effect of Implicit Prosody and Context on the Disambiguation of Chinese Balanced Ambiguous Structure
Miao YU, Simin ZHOU, Jiaxin LONG
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2022, 20 (6): 739-746.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2022.06.004
    Abstract371)   HTML25)    PDF(pc) (575KB)(561)       Save

In order to explore the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis, the present study conducted an eye movement experiment to explore the effect of implicit prosody boundary and context on processing the balanced “V+N1+de+N2” ambiguous structure. The results showed that in the narrative-object context, the total fixation durations were shorter and the regressions-in proportion was lower when the prosodic boundary was located behind the “verb” (the meaning of prosodic boundary guidance is consistent with the context) than when the prosodic boundary was located behind “de” (the meaning of prosodic boundary guidance is inconsistent with the context). This suggests that ambiguous structure is easier to be processed when its meaning guided by prosodic boundary is consistent with the context than when it is inconsistent with the context. These findings provide evidence from Chinese for the universality of the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis.

The Effect of Threat-Related Emotions on Time Perception: Based on the Emotional Motivation Dimension
Xiujuan GUO, Weicong REN, Zhijie ZHANG
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2023, 21 (3): 289-295.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2023.03.001
    Abstract461)   HTML47)    PDF(pc) (633KB)(559)       Save

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of two specific threatening emotions, anger and fear on time perception based on the emotional motivation dimension theory. By using different emotional pictures (faces in Experiment 1 and bodies in Experiment 2) and different time perception tasks (time comparison tasks in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, and time estimation tasks in Experiment 3), we found that compared with the neutral emotion, anger shortened the time perception while fear lengthened it. These results suggest that time perception becomes shorter under approach motivation and longer under withdrawal motivation.

Fen REN, Tuo LIU, Baoli QI, Shaoheng XU, Zhengcheng LING
    Studies of Psychology and Behavior    2023, 21 (1): 36-42.   DOI: 10.12139/j.1672-0628.2023.01.006
    Abstract472)   HTML59)    PDF(pc) (717KB)(553)       Save

This study aimed to investigate the effects of two-sided narcissism on the sensitivity of reward and punishment as well as to test the moderate role of gender in the link between narcissistic admiration-rivalry and the behavioral inhibition/approach system. Four hundred and eighty-three college students were randomly recruited from a university. All participants completed Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ) and BIS/BAS items online. The results showed that: 1) admiration narcissism was positively correlated with behavioral approach system and negatively correlated with behavioral inhibition system; 2) rivalry narcissism positively correlated with behavioral inhibition system, but no correlation was observed with the behavioral approach system; and 3) gender played a moderating role in the relationship between two sides of narcissism and behavioral system. In summary, females are more sensitive to both reward and punishment than males.
