    Abstract558)   HTML60)    PDF(pc) (777KB)(1376)       Save
The aim of the present study was to explore the characteristics of parental favoritism and its relationship with adolescent depression in two-child families. Participants were 1,655 adolescents from two-child families. Findings were as follows: 1) Both maternal and paternal favoritism were at a low level with no significant difference. 2) There were significant gender and birth order differences in maternal and paternal favoritism, that is, a) boys reported that parents favor themselves more, while girls reported that parents favor their siblings more; b) the first-borns reported that fathers favored themselves more and mothers favored their siblings more, while the second-borns reported the opposite pattern. 3) Both maternal and paternal favoritism were U-curvilinearly associated with adolescent depression. Adolescents with either strongly parenting favored or strongly parenting disfavored were associated with higher levels of depression, compared with that with a more moderate range of parental favoritism. These findings indicate that there is no serious parental favoritism in two-child families, but parental favoritism have negative effects on adolescent development.

Studies have been conducted to examine the intrinsic association between online social media use and loneliness among older adults from different theoretical perspectives, but the results are inconsistent. Meta-analysis was used to explore the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly to clarify the controversies. The current study contained 39 research literatures, including 49 independent effect sizes. Random effects model was selected for analysis, and it was found that social media use was negatively correlated with loneliness, emotional loneliness and social loneliness of the elderly. Furthermore, the relationship between social media use and loneliness of the elderly was moderated by social media measurement indicators and loneliness measurement tools, but was not by gender and cultural background. This study provided a more accurate estimate of the impact of social media use on loneliness in the elderly, and clarified the differences in the magnitude and direction of the correlation between the two, which would be helpful for guiding the elderly to use social media rationally to alleviate loneliness.

To establish the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of Carson et al.’s Creative Achievement Questionnaire (CAQ), the following steps were taken. Firstly, the original questionnaire was translated into Chinese, and then translated back into English, and finally culturally adjusted. Test-retest reliability of the Chinese version of CAQ (C-CAQ; Spearman’s ρ=0.77, p<0.01) was established in a sample of 59 adults. Convergent validity of C-CAQ was established with other measures of creative potential in a sample of 107 adults, including divergent thinking tests (Unusual Uses Task, UUT, with ρs ranging from 0.19 to 0.26; Picture Completion Task, with ρ of CAQ and PCT’s elaborateness being 0.24; all results were statistically significant) and Openness to Experience (The Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory brief version, CBF-PI-B, ρ=0.29, p<0.01). Discriminant validity of C-CAQ was established against IQ (Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices, RSPM, ρ=0.20, p=0.12) in a sample of 59 adults. Construct validity of C-CAQ was established by exploratory factor analysis of CAQ’s 10 domains in a sample of 324 adults. Criterion validity of C-CAQ was established against everyday creativity performance (Kaufman Domains of Creativity Scale, K-DOCS) in a sample of 122 adults, with ρs of C-CAQ’s and K-DOCS’s science, arts and total scores respectively being 0.62, 0.47 and 0.41, and all statistically significant. The study result showed that the Chinese version of CAQ had acceptable validity and reliability among Chinese adults.

In order to investigate the impact of social support on post traumatic growth and to test the mediating role of psychological resilience between social support and post traumatic growth after 10 years of Wenchuan earthquake, 997 high school students were tested by social support questionnaires, post-traumatic growth inventory, and the Connor-Davidson resilience scale. The results were as follows: 1) social support had a significant positive predictive effect on post-traumatic growth, and psychological resilience played a partial mediating role between social support and post-traumatic growth; 2) there was no gender difference in the intermediary process of social support and post traumatic growth, but the social support of girls had a greater predictive effect on their psychological resilience than that of boys. In conclusion, social support can not only directly and positively affect post-traumatic growth, but also indirectly and positively affect post-traumatic growth through psychological resilience. Effective social support and psychological resilience contribute to post-traumatic growth of adolescents.
